How to change the language in bbPress 2.0

I'm setting up a discussion forum to one of my Wordpress sites with bbPress and got stuck early on when trying to change the system language (locale). This is a rather trivial problem but one that took a lot of time to track down. The problem is that most of the documentation out there is for bbPress 1.x which doesn't apply to bbPress 2.x anymore. I wish bbPress would get more love from the creators of Wordpress but until that happens we just need to get by with what we've got.

Where to get the language files

I assume you have already installed Wordpress and the bbPress plugin.

To get your language file follow these steps:

  1. Go to http://translate.wordpress.org/projects/bbpress and choose your preferred language.
  2. While on the country translation page browse to the bottom of the page, choose mo from the drop down menu and click Export.
  3. Save the file under your Wordpress installation to the following folder: /wp-content/languages/bbpress/ (for bbPress versions prior 2.1) or /wp-content/plugins/bbpress/bbp-languages/ (for bbPress versions 2.1 and later).
  4. Rename the file from bbpress-plugin-fr.mo to the format bbpress-fr_FR.mo (in case of a French language file). See here if you need help in determining the correct country and language code.

One last thing

You are almost there. Open your wp-config.php file in the Wordpress installation and look for the following line:

define ('WPLANG', '');

Modify it according to the language you downloaded e.g. in the above case this would end up being:

define ('WPLANG', 'fr_FR');

That's it. Save and enjoy your new translation at work!
